Chipboard flooring 18mm or 22mm

Hi, we are currently building a small extension for a kitchen and cloakroom (wc and sink). Its our intention to place tiles on chipboard. Can we use 18mm or 22mm?

Is standard chipboard ok or should we be looking at moisture resistant chipboard?

The price difference is a hundred pounds.

Flooring grade chipboard is the way to go.

Is this a new timber floor or an existing floor?

On new floors all chipboard must be moisture resistant. On joists with centres of 450mm, 18mm chipboard is OK. For joist centres of 600mm, 22mm is used.
  • We always use 18mm Weyrock moisture resistant tongue and groove, won't go wrong with this product

You can't tile directly onto chipboard (assuming you mean ceramics or similar). Actually you can - its not a hanging offence but it is totally not recommended. Its not stable enough in the first place and in the second the slightest bit of damp under there and it will blow and up will come your tiles..

If you are going straight onto joists then use 25mm WBP ply screwed at 75mm centres direct into joists. Use noggins where edges are unsupported.

The alternative is to lay tilebacker board (Marmox or Hardiebacker or similar) over your 18mm chipboard to provide a suitable substrate for tiling. n But again it must be screwed through into joists or noggins and not just into the chipboard.

    Cheers

  • There are several options, I missed out on the tiling over but you could use the tilebacker or even a thin ply. noggins would be the usual practice.
