Bought car but hpi check shows personal loan?

  • You are free to sell the car, as the loan is not tied to the car. I bought a motorbike quite a few years ago, which had a personal loan linked to it on a hpi check.
On ringing the finance company, they said the seller is free to sell the bike.
I'm disappointed at all the incorrect advice being given on this thread! Especially one about the car being on a log book loan!

Yes, I agree there. I can't see Santander doing log book loans.

A personal loan would not show up on an HPI check though.

Hands up for posting having only skim read the thread. I had not picked up on it being Santander. Had Santander not been named, the log book loan was not a ridiculous theory, but admittedly no they wouldn't do log book loans.

    Touche ;)
  • how long did he own the car for, before selling

What absolute utter tosh! Explain how it is naughty?

It may be the case that a flag is put onto HPI to protect the customer in the event of the vehicle being stolen.

With a personal loan the title of the vehicle immediately passes to the consumer upon purchase. Unlike HP where an HPI flag indicates vehicle ownership a PL flag purely protects the customer not the finance house.

    Any questions?

I had a similar thing happen to me. I bought a car and didnt do a check at the time. I then became pregnant and needed to sell it for something bigger. When someone came to buy it they did a check and said it had outstanding finance. I contacted a site called called SPAMMY LINK DELETED and asked if they could give me advice. They told me that as long as it was not a logbook loan and the vehicle was bought in "good faith" then they advised me to contact the finance company and the seller. In the receipt the seller stated the car was from finance so all I needed to do was send a copy of the receipt to the finance company and they replied a week or so later to say I would not be persued for payment. It took a while to get the car removed from the hpi register but eventually I was able to sell the car without any problems.

    Hope this helps.

Why would you go to such a dodgy site for advice and why have you posted about them so many times.

THey also seem to go to great lenghts to hide their identidy - no contact details on the web site and a hidden domain registration (which I've just reported to Nominet).
