Interesting mix of views re magic corners - we don't have them and I just use those corners to store the things that we hardly ever use :)

I try that. One cupboard has our wedding crockery up the far corner so doesn't need accessing very often. But the other is full of baking dishes and serving bowls that I use more often but not the same ones every time. I end up almost emptying the damn thing for certain dishes.

  • We have recently moved and it has a new kitchen. The pan drawers are amazing and we also havepull out spice racks which is great for me as I can see exactly what we have and I also cook a lot. I have a wok burner which is used all of the time:). We also had a magic corner but I got hubby to remove it for me as it was such a waste of space:(. The pull out pantry is fine but to be honest I would have preferred a Normal cupboard. The dream would be a walk in pantry.

I think you really have to take in to account how you are going to use your kitchen. If you cook a lot and use a lot of gadgets - mixer, slow cooker, etc do you want these permanently on display or cupboards that are big enough to put them away. I am struggling with room to stockpile at the moment. I have jars of jam under my bed:rotfl:

  • I love my pullout larder -had it a few years now and wouldn't be without it -I feel it's easier to see what you have as opposed to the cupboards - in saying that its only three quarters of the unit high -with two shelves up above but I would totally recommend one .

We converted our understairs cupboard to a pantry. Only thing I don't like in my kitchen is that it's a galley kitchen (door at either end) and on occasions if I'm cooking, OH coming through from the back and DD lurking in the doorway (which she likes to do - I used to have a cat that did that, too!) I'm always sidestepping them or saying "budge up!"

Saucepans are in one cupboard, all cookware in another and baking sheets/tins in an open shelved cupboard so we don't have to unpack the whole cupboard to get to the item we want to use.

I would love a hot water tap though!

A steam oven is on my wish list. A tap as someone else described. Beautiful worktops! We are preparing to do our kitchen in May.
  • Great ideas and really helpful to hear people's comments who have some of the items. Thanks for replies so far, look forward to any other suggestions.

Actually, someone mentioned those taps that you can pull out and use as a hose - just remembered when I was living in London Thames Water sent us an attachment that turns your tap into a shower spray which I loved. I took it with me when I moved but sadly it didn't fit onto the new properties old-fashioned mixer tap.

This is the one although looks like you can get it cheaper on eb@y http://www.savewatersavemoney.co.uk/products/view/id/317/item/water-efficient-tap-miracle-black

I think pan drawers are a must. They are far more useful than cupboards. Also I agree a pull out larder isn't so good. A tall cupboard with pull out baskets would be better. I have a wide 3 burner induction hob and didn't need more burners even at Christmas, also a dream to keep clean. I think a double oven ( small oven and large oven with grill) is more economical, as a small oven is cheaper to use if you want to cook for 2 people . They should also be eye level in a housing, so much easier to clean. My plumber doesn't recommend a hot boiling tap, he said they are troublesome. My first kitchen had cupboards up to the ceiling so no grease, less cleaning and lots more storage space. Wall cupboards nowadays don't seem so tall, but then as someone said who looks on top of the cupboards!
You always need lots of worktop space - especially for all that batch cooking and freezing!

Oh nooooo - I want sooo much and I know it won't fit! I didn't realise, untill reading this, how much I want! I thought I had it all planned, big kitchen refit planned for May/June - have now realised I 'want' things I didn't know I 'wanted' - heeeeellllllppp!

    Pull out larder - no
    Spray tap 'thingy' - yes
Instant boiling water - yes (have one at work - it's fantastic)
    Saucepan drawers - yes
    Magic corner - no

I really don't want wall units, like the open shelf look. But...am I tidy enough?

Smallish kitchen so have to get it right. However, must have a 6 burner (we're total foodies who cook a lot).

One thing I couldn't do without is my rather large, side-by-side, fridge/freezer. Takes up a lot of room but is used as a larder too.
