we are looking for some informaion about the town of Bardolino on Lake Garda. Is it a good base for a first visit to the area and is the town itself got a reasonable array of shops, bars and restaurants. Do any ferries run accross the lake from here and roughly how much do the cost. Is there a bus service which may include a route to Verona. Where else is accessible and worth visiting from Bordolino. Any feedback will greatly appreciated. Thank you

The ferries run all over the Lake, but they are quite expensive, and a bit restrictive in that if you buy a ticket to from A to C you cannot get off at B and re board and carry on to C. On Lake Como you can do that, so I am not sure why it is different on Garda.
Bardolino is lovely but really my choice would be Salo, Limone, Malcesine. Not sure about buses as we had a car, but there are two towns with stations in the Lake.0 -
I havent stayed in Bardolino itself but have stayed in Garda town many times which is just a short walk away from Bardolino.
Bardolino is lovely as Poet says, but is fairly small and there isnt much night life apart from bars and restaurants like most of the towns around the lake.
as well as the ferries there are plenty of buses going around the lake and its also very easy to get a bus into Verona. you can also get the bus into Peschiera at the bottom of the lake and from there take the train to either Venice or Milan. again very easy to do.0 -
Just got back from garda which is the next town along the lake from bardolino. Bardolino is nice enough and there are plenty of restaurants/supermarkets/shops etc. + a nice lakefront promenade which stretches all the way to garda.
There is a boat pier and ferry times are here http://www.navlaghi.it/eng/
It is cheaper to get about by bus and they are more frequent. The buses through Bardolino go to verona as well as north up the lake to riva del garda. Ticket to verona is about 4 euros one way (1 hour). You could consider visting torri del benaco which is a quite quiet and picturesque old town about 15 minutes away by bus. There is also a cable car from malchesine to the top of monte baldo giving views over the lake. Buy bus tickets before getting on the bus and don't forget to stamp them.
It is relatively easily to get to get to bardolino from verona airport (2 buses) or even milan (1 hour train + 30 minute bus ride each way). You can visit venice on day trips too although we didn't as it would be a long day with young kids.
To be aware - it isn't a cheap area, particularly sitting drinking by the lake. Think 4.50euro for a small (400ml) beer, wine is cheaper. Food isn't too bad price wise if you like pizza! Also wine in restaurants is much cheaper (around 10 eur for 1 litre). Self catering obviosuly much cheper, try the 1 euro boxes of wine with some ham and bread for a nice picnic lunch.
Expense aside, we have just returned from our 2nd trip here as we loved it so much the first time, so enjoy!0 -
Went to Bardolino last year after much deliberation where to stay on the lake and we made the right decision. Enough restaurants/bars to fill the week and it is a great base for getting to/from the airport and exploring other places (Sirmone/Riva/Venice/Verona). Didn't find the cost of drinks and food much different to the UK to be honest. Beer was a bit more but you do get aperativo early evening so you can chomp on that! Bardolino has lovely lakeside walk to Garda (and other places) with little bars and swimming spots along the way and we liked it much more than other places on the lake which we visited. If you end up there, try a cocktail at Mate Bar - recommended!0

We would recommend Bardolino ad a good place to stay if you have never been to Lake Garda before .It is definitely worth taking the public bus to Verona for a day, as organised excursions are not cheap. Also visit Sirimone "A must see place". We though the ferry boats on the lake were extraordinary expensive, could get crowded and uncomfortable. We considered them to be poor value for money.0

We are going to Bardolino at the end of May. We have never been before but propose to take the bus into Verona (about 1 hour we understand) and spend the day there. We believe the ferries are o n the Spring timetables and the fares are quite expensive. Can anybody confirm cost of ferries please.0

We stayed in Salo last year and we did find them expensive, we were glad we had rented a car. I can't give you the costs but I remember we thought it quite expensive.
The problem we found was that if you had a ticket from A to C you had to go there only, you could not get off at B and re board later to carry on to C. On Lake Como you can do that.0 -
When we were in the area we went by bus to Malcasine and from there they do a day ticket to all the northern towns that you can come and go as you please all day, we did Malcasini to Simone for a wander and coffee and on to Torbole for a wander on to Riva Del garda for a wander and late lunch, back to all the ones we stoped at on the way but never got off and back to Malcasine. Great day out for a reasonable cost, 3/4 years ago and I think it was about 12 euros, probably a bit more now0
