Absent Parent Support

Hi

We are in Scotland and my 18 year old (step)daughter is in first year at Uni and has been trying to get some extra cash from her estranged dad to try and avoid taking the full allowance from SAAS.

He says maximum student loans are a fact of life these days and as she is an adult he doesn't have to give her anything. I find it bizarre that i am deemed responsible for her while she is in full-time education but he isn't.

I might add that its the principal i disagree with, i don't grudge her some money.

Is it worth her seeing a solicitor?

Ally

    No - he's right.

Particularly as she doesn't have to take out the fee loan as you're in Scotland, it's quite reasonable to take out all the maintenance loan that's available to her.

(By the way, is he actually estranged from her or just from you?)

He has some, but not much, contact with her (his choice).
