Can I make my cable internet wireless with a bt router?

Hello,

I've recently joined Virgin from BT and I'm left with a horrible white cable from the router to PC.

Annoyingly, next to the cable modem is my old BT wireless router. I've tried plugging a cat5 cable into the ethernet port of the two to connect them but it doesn't send the signal.

Is it possible to make my BT router send the Virgin signal? Or should I just buy a wireless router?

no, since the one used with BT is an ADSL Modem + Router and you cannot separate the two functions. Sell it on eBay.

Buy the wireless router

The cable modem produces the connection through RJ-45 ethernet. This needs to be plugged into a "WAN In" port on a Cable Wireless Router as you mentioned. Though DSL is RJ11 for WAN In. Some DSL/Cable Wireless Router have both but from the sounds of things yours only has RJ11 for the WAN port?

Someone may have an alternative option but from my experience the only way is buying a Cable Wireless Router. Will be cheaper than a DSL one due to no modem being needed in-built

You should be able to use any wireless device be it a ADSL router with modem, if you have a cable router which according to you you say you have.

your cable modem connects to your cable router which then you connect your network to be it a pc or wireless access point or bt router in this case.

To make this work you configure the cable modem to act as the dhcp server so it gives out itself as gateway and dns server. your BT wireless router connects via the LAN port to the cable router on eone of its LAN ports, dont configure it as DHCP server just give it an IP address and subnet mask to make it part of your network then you can connect your PC's to your network via the bt router that is acting as an access point.

This does work.

Yup as little john says (and trust me I'm doing it atm) you can plug the ethernet from the cable modem into any router.

don't know if we're talking about the same thing here, but I have Virgin BB direct to my desktop and I use a BT Voyager 1500 Wireless Router to connect to my laptop wirelessly. Don't know if that's what you mean. It works perfectly.

Virgin BB is supplied via ADSL in non cabled areas like yours. The OP has stated that they have a cable modem.

I am in a cabled area and use Virgin BB through a cable modem. What I was saying is that I use a BT wireless router to get interness access on my laptop!

Sorry about the confusion. Virgin customers should always state if they get their BB via cable or BT line (ADSL).
