I've put them in see through pots so I'm not tempted to keep lifting them out.

I believe that the "gel" was something like wallpaper paste but one has to be careful that the medium doesn't kill rather than promote growth. This is also useful to use in starting off seeds and then once chitted can be put into a piping bag and safely transferred to a "drill" in the plot. long time since I tried it but you can also make your own paste by using flour and water and boiling it to make it a clear gel. At least the propriety pastes have an anti-fungicide element which traditionally prevents mould on wallpaper but will also help with damping-off disease. Hope this helps someone.0
