Just out of general curiosity, where does one stand if say someone like H-L went bust (unlikely, I know:eek:) and one had a portfolio of shares with them beyond the £85,000 protection threshold?
Or does this £85,000 threshold even apply to shares held by H-L type organisations?

The £85k relates to cash deposits, not shares.
If HL went bust the shares remain. You wouldn't lose out.
You might want to research the £50k FSCS limit for investments.
