Although jubilee line is part of the underground system, i wouldnt say the stations this far out, have that 'underground' feeling. If that is the reason why the OP avoids the underground. They are more ground level

I regularly go to North Greenwich tube station and can confirm it is very 'underground'. :D I agree that some stations are at ground level such as West Ham but North Greenwich is two escalators down, one of them quite long. Also queuing to get down to catch the tube after an event is a crowd control event, so if the OP has issues with crowds and confined spaces then this could be an issue.

Depending how far you are willing to travel, you can easily get one bus from places such as Greenwich, Woolwich, Bexleyheath, etc. Loads of buses start and end at North Greenwich Station so you could stay in a cheap hotel along any of these routes.

Or for anyone willing to pay for a hotel along the Thames in London, they could then get the Thames Clipper to the venue.

and then add to this for a nervous tube traveller the small matter of being under the river

Maybe a bus would be a better option for OP if transport is necessary.

Yes. But as i said it doesnt have the claustrophobic feel of stations within the city. If the OP hates tubes due to the experiences they have had, getting around town, then going the one stop from canning town is nothing like that. Even on event days, its bearable.

You go up one escalator and you are into an open concourse. Up another and you are at street level. You dont have to walk through miles of tunnels to get to the platforms. It doesnt feel dark and oppresive, it is a light, bright station

If the OP is totally against using the tube, even for one stop, and is considering staying in Docklands, they could always get the DLR to Royal Victoria and cross to the O2 on the Emirates Airline cable car. Not a very MSE approach as it costs a fair bit more than the tube, but should give some good views.

Just a warning about the Emirates cable car suggestion, it closes before concerts finish, usually at 2000, doesn't operate at all if the winds are strong, and if someone is frightened of the Tube, they may be mortified by the cable car across the water. The Thames Clipper which operates after every concert from a pier 5 minutes walk away may be a much better option and booking in advance guarantees you travel, it also has a licenced bar and Costa coffee service should eitehr be necessary
