Wireless speed problem

Hi all
Can you help with a problem with wireless speed. I have a new phone and internet connection. If I plug into the router I get a good speed of about 10 M/bs but wireless speed is only 1.5 M/bs.

The router is in the same room as the PC but unfortunately too far from the PC for me to plug in all the time. The same problem happens with a laptop we have too.

Until we had this line we had been borrowing a neighbours wifi (with their permission of course) and I was getting about 7.5 M/bs even at about 100 metres from their house. They do have an access point.
But nothing about my PC has changed - so I assume it isn't the hardware.

The router is a ZTE H108NS (I'm in Greece and this is the router supplied by the telephone company). I have changed the channel on the router but nothing else yet - that didn't make a difference.

So has anybody got any suggestions as to what I can try.

Thank you

What is your speed supposed to be?
    Do you have a password?
Have you tried speed test (google it)
What computer and router do you have?
  • Speed should be up to 24 M/Bs
I have a password - which seems to be ok - without I wouldn't be able to access the internet at all.
I have tried different speed tests - that's where the above figures came from
The router is a ZTE H108NS

I don't think ZTE modems/hubs are available in most markets - it's not a brand I've ever heard of and I can't find any manuals available online for the model you mention. What's more, Google's translation skills with Greek are strictly pants*.

Do you have access to the modem's admin pages? If so, how is the unit set up - wireless speed, encryption, etc.?

*Quote for everyone's enjoyment. Google translation of a Greek forum reply on this modem:
"Well yesterday morning I was forthnet and synchronizes with megkapit at 16.5 snr 6 / / It comes the otetzis I get the line to put me on the network of OTE since I applied to go to him, and something is in Kaffa. when activated OTE synchronize with the 10 megkampit snr 9 - and declare DAMAGE EXPECTED .. with zte'm 10 and if you put the thomson v8 go to 11"

I think I can see why you need help.
  • I do have access to the admin pages -
    Encryption says TKIPAES
    Wireless speed - I don't know
    Channel is 11
    Bandwidth 20/40
Lots of other things in there which I don't understand and daren't change.

Glad you can now see my problem. I can probably talk to OTE (Service Provider) on Monday but I'm not sure their English will be good enough for a technophobe like me - and my Greek will certainly not be up to the job.

Please ask me for any specific information and I will let you know what I can.

    Thanks for trying
  • Although this has a different model number, it seems to be identical to the router I have.

I'm afraid the ADSL stuff is beyond me. The only thing that strikes me is that the router is set to a fixed channel - 11. Try it on auto (page 27 - access point settings). I don't know what sort of wireless environment you're in, but if it's an urban environment with lots of wireless modems about, you could be getting interference. Auto setting should help, or you could install inSSIDer and look for the least congested area of the wireless spectrum.

Can't find anything in the manual about security settings. Odd.
  • I'm in a very rural area so when I try to connect to a network, there is only ours and our neighbours as a choice anyway. I tried inSSIDer but the only thing that showed again was me and the neighbour. I have changed the channel to auto but that hasn't made a difference

Rather than choosing auto, choosing a different channel to the one that your neighbour is on might help.

If all else fails why not just buy a really long Ethernet cable? Not sure what they cost in Greece but I picked up a ten metre Ethernet cable for £2 here. Also bought some wall taps so I could hammer it to the wall so it's not in the way. Was under £10 altogether and took about five minutes to do.

My router is on the opposite side of the room to my Sky box, Xbox and TV, but it's all connected by cable.

Alternatively could you possibly get a different router? One that supports 5GHz (preferably dual band) would help a lot as long as your equipment also supports 5GHz.
