School fete bestseller...

We've found we ended up drastically reducing cakes prices at school fetes or we would end up with left overs. Shame really. Biggest 'money spinner' at ours is the tombola usually, guess who gets the job of running that manic stall!!!!
At my son's school they had a "Cake Tombola" rather than an ordinary cake stall - they found they made more money that way! When it got near to the end of the afternoon, any remaining cakes went on sale, but there weren't usually many left.0 -

Thanks!!!
I had posted on here.. tell you what, I'll resurrect the threda because there were plenty of scrumptious recipes!I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
Tablet is just another name for fudge.
I haven't yet made cakes for our school cake stall, but there isn't any silly rule about not allowing home-made cakes and it's always the first stall to sell out at the annual fete. Who on earth would want to buy shop cakes which have an awful dry texture and a strange background taste to them?0 -
Mmm difficult... up here Tablet is hard and fudge is soft !
anyway just been to Asda and they are selling 50 small food bags (orange plastic pack 7x9ins) for 5pa pack so bought a bundle great for bagging sale stuff.0 -

Maybe there are different recipes? I have a Scottish friend who makes tablet every Christmas (along with some other goodies!) and gives them out to friends for Christmas presents. It definitely looked and tasted like fudge to me! I have to admit to not being able to eat fudge - there's so much sugar in it that one piece gives me a chronic headache.0 -
Cake tombola, now that is an idea I might have to try.One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
Tablet- but maybe this is just a scottish thing!- always sells well . I'm sure the folk in Asda think my family must have very sweet tooths when I load up for a tablet making session. Next two weekends require vast quantities so I'll be getting funny looks again!!
can u tell me how u make ur tablet i have lots of different recipes but dont know what i do to it it never turns out right, i end up getting my cousin to make it for me thanks.0 -

This quantity makes enough to fill 2 swiss roll tins.Costs are roughly £2.70 not including power and fills approx 16-18 bags 100-120grams in each.Selling price ranges from 50p a bag if kids are selling it (makes it easy for them to add up!) to what ever you want to charge.
2kg bag granulated sugar
250g solid stork block margarine
1 large tin (410g) Evaporated milk made up to 1 3/4 pints with fresh milk
Put all into large pan (I use my jam pan) and bring up to boil stirring now and again. keep it at a rolling boil and turn heat down a wee bit if needs be.Boil for at least 1 1/2 hours although it can take up to 2 1/4 hours till 'soft ball' is reached ( cold water in cup dribble in wee bit of mixture and you should be able to roll mixture into quite a firm ball) Take off heat and beat for 10 mins ( I use a balloon whisk) pour into greased tins and leave till starting to set then mark into squares . Leave till cold and then it should just tip out and snap cleanly into squares!
I like this recipe as you don't have to stand there all the time- just stir it now and again0 -
The Australian fundraising tradition is a LAMINGTON drive. Lamingtons are like madalines but instead of covering them in jam and rolling in coconut, you dip the bricks of sponge in runny chocolate icing then roll in coconut. To speed things up you can buy the sponge from a commercial bakery but do the dipping/rolling yourself. If you think reality makes sense, you're just not paying attention!0

I think I will give those a try! might try it with melted chocolate aswell.0
