SMS App

I have got to send my phone away for repair and I was wondering if it is possible to download an App to my tablet to use for free messaging. I won't have a phone/number to use as a spare. I would also like to use the tablet for messaging using Wifi while I am in the USA on holiday.
Does anyone know of a cheap/free App that would be ok for this?

Thank you. Probably will be. I was just hoping for something as quick and easy as sending a text.

If your sending the phone for repair why are you sending the SIM card? Put it in another phone while the repair phone is away.

Have you checked to see whether your tablet can use watsapp?

It does need your friends to be signed up too, but DD hardly ever texts any more.

Thank you for replies. I don't really want to buy another phone. I am hoping for a repair within a couple of weeks.
I didn't realise you could use WhatsApp on the tablet. That sounds perfect.

You can't use Whatsapp unless your tablet is able to make phone calls, as Whatsapp identifies users through phone numbers.

You could try IMO, Skype, Facebook Messenger, etc.
