Last year I got car insurance with Nationwide reduced from £140 to about £109.
And today I just got Tesco home insurance reduced from £120 to £89
All you have to do is ask for "retentions" or "cancellations" better if you can say what the current best buys are (get some online quotes or know what the deals are that are around e.g Post Office offering £50 cash back). Otherwise you'll either have to wing it or keep quiet - tell them to give you "their best price" before you say what you have found.
Today I was on the phone to Tesco home insurance CS and asked them to put me through to someone who could reduce my renewal, or to reduce it themselves if they were authorised. The reply was something like "We are not a broker so we can't reduce the premiums - sorry"
I said "Are you telling me you don't have a retentions department"?
"Oh yes" says she
"well can you put me through then"
"Yes certainly" says she.
After requesting they call me back so I don't waste money on phone calls. They did phone me back and I now had a saving of £30.
It saves on paperwork if you can stay with the same insurer - but they have to come up with the goods if they want me to stay with them.

Another tip is to go to their website and put in your details as a new customer and see what premium comes up.
Most of the time new customers get a better deal.0 -
I would like to echo ejones999's tip on insurance renewals.
I have recently received my motorbike insurance renewal (£137.83) from my insurer Bennetts. I applied on-line as a new customer and for the exact same cover I received a quote for £113.81.
I found a simliar saving opportunity with my AA breakdown cover last year.
From my experience, inurance companies do not reward loyalty.... so always get a quote as a new customer.0
