Oh good grief!!! We moved house at the end of jan to a property with gas (previously had oil) received a bill from an estimated meter reading today for £440!!!! We gave them the correct reading and it's come down to £352. Surely it can't be that much. £176 per month for a 3bed double glazed, fully insulated house. Heatings on 7am-12noon then 2pm-7.30pm. I am in utter shock! We guesstimated we'd be £80 per month.

Does this sound accurate?

Sadly it prob is. My gas bill is more than double my electric. In winter I limited the heating to a couple of hours per day as I knew I would not be able to afford it. You seems to have it on more than double mine.

Have you tried turning it down one degree etc?
Don’t put it down - put it away!

Sounds accurate to me. You have the heating on for 12 hours of the day. Having it off for 2 hours in the middle makes little difference.

Over the year the gas bill will probably be around the £80 mark averaged over 12 months but in winter each month is twice the average and in summer it'll be half the average. Very rough estimate though.

We've had oil for the past 3 years so I didn't realise how expensive gas had become. We asked to switch suppliers when we first moved in but it's taken a long time to be processed. Thankfully we switch in 5 days time but still need to find the £352 in the meantime for the other company EEP!

I would have the heating off more but we have 3 kids (6,4,2) and I'm a SAHM so need to have it on a bit more for their benefit.

Lesson Learned though! Will try and see if we can reduce the amount of time it's on. The thermostat is between 3 and 4 at the moment. Seeing as we're used to oil systems we're not really sure what it should be at. We thought that would be OK as it was halfway.
