Cancelling Card with Credit balance

Due to a balance transfer some time ago, I have discovered there is a credit balance on an old card. Unfortunately the card is destroyed. Can I request the balance to be repaid to me, or must I use the card to reduce the balance before the account can be shut down? The fact that customer services seem to keep me waiting for hours doesn't help!

Thats your money! you more than entitled to it, ring them up and just ask for the credit balanmce to be returned to you via a cheque or your current account.

OH had a credit balance on one of his cards, as we are getting rid of excess cards, we just rang them up.

what card is it? if its a bank-linked one, how about popping into branch, if the phones are taking so long

The reason why I asked this question is because I have run up a small credit balance before on another card and they insisted I need to use the card or retransfer the balance back to the original card which would have resulted in the same problem, just on another card!

banks are often not keen to send you the money to your current account or by cheque as you are essentially asking for a "super balance transfer" for free, and most firms would ordinarily levy a fee on this.
