Newbie Container Planting Advice

Hi everyone,
My OH has given me the "responsibility" of planting a container beside our front door, but I'm not sure what will grow there. It's very small (he thinks I'll kill whatever I plant so that's all I'm getting to use) - only about 1' x 2' but the main problem is it's only 5" deep so I think I'm limited as to what to put in there, but ideally I'd like it to look nice all year...if that's even possible!?
Other than a bit of weeding in the school holidays for my Dad over 20 years ago I haven't done a thing before, so any help would be appreciated! x
