Worth buying a Nexus 7 now?

I want to buy a 7" Android tablet at the end of April as a birthday present for my wife. All the advice I've had so far has been to buy a Nexus. However, Google is supposed to be launching a new version soon, which makes me wonder.
She insists she doesn't even want something as expensive as the Nexus (which is lucky for me!) but I don't mind paying a bit extra for what seems to be a decent machine.
But would I be better buying a different tablet altogether? An Acer, perhaps? Something else? Wait for the new Nexus?
All opinions gratefully received - except 'buy an Apple'!

well, the nexus is currently one of the top performing 7 inch devices, and will be supported by google for a good few years even if they release a new model...
I wouldn't expect a drop in the price of the current one as they are not selling for profit (like the apple devices) - it's more likely that the new device will just be more expensive! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I would go for £180 Asus Fonepad instead. Release on 26/04
You can pre-order at amazon
It has micro SD and 3G. And you can make phone call with bluetooth if you want to.0
