The first thing to check is whether she is receiving all the benefits she is entitled to.
Us the benefit calculator here:

Next a few ideas.
1. A visit to CAB who might know of a charity who would assist.
2. Is there a Credit Union near her? These are really the best form of cheap borrowing (other than family or friends.)
3. Budgeting loan - not totally sure whether this one is viable but worth investigating.
4. Already said, but worth repeating - do a SOA on the debtfree wannabe board - always ways to save money and they are experts on that sub forum.
5. Sell/ebay anything and everything.0 -
Housing officer and voids officer visited my SIL and because she has and is paying off the arrears for over 26 weeks they are happy to stick with that they also stated something about priority needs but not medical, the voids officer went round her current place and wrote a few things down ie decorating.
I told her that their actions and visit rather that a phone call sounds positive and it sounds like she will be offered a property soon. Have I raised her hopes wrongly?0 -
She told the supervisor what her officer said about moving with rent arrears. She told her that there would be no way she would be able to move while she had arrears.
When she sat and worked it out it would take 18 months before she can move, by then she will be in a much worse condition medically and more importantly mentally.
At the moment she's paying about £6.25 a week off the arrears, from the figures you've estimated.
There is no right to move if arrears have accrued.
As it is a small sum, relatively speaking, and is having a big impact on her, could the family have a whip round to pay it off?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Why is SIL paying for perscriptions? is she married and doesnt qualify ?Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

Jeez, is there really nobody that can come up with £500.00 or possible 10 people with £50.00?
Your post tells me you have never struggled financially...When you and your family are poor £500 might as well be 5 million..
What part of skint do people not understand?
Some people would struggle to get a tenner together..It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0
