PPI - Trick question by bank? Advice please

Hi Everyone
Yesterday my partner went to enquire about a loan, he was refused, however the bank advisor at LloydsTSB did tell him that he was entitled to some PPI refund payments as he'd taken out loans in the past which had PPI attached to them. He was handed a telephone number to contact the division at Lloyds that deals with this and he was questioned as to why he wanted the PPI payment. She was quite persistent that and asked him several times, why he felt he deserved a payout. He said he was entitled to it, and that if it was going to be a problem them he'd do it through the claims company and the woman quickly told him that it wasn't necessary, as it was now registered with them. (As if we didn't have a choice to change his mind and claim using a different route). Then she still banged on as to why he wanted the money, so he said that Lloyds bank advisor told him to contact their claim line. But she still wasn't satisfied with the answer.
If we had known that this was going to happen, we would have either gone through a PPI claims company or used a template letter from the MoneySaving Expert website, but we have only found out about this after having called LloydsTSB PPI claim line.
With hindsight, it was probably a trick question from the bank to avoid payout, as for what I've read on the MSE templates the key words he should have told her as " He was mis-sold the PPI, but this did not happen. So to cut a long story short - has he blown his chance to claim a PPI payout? Or if he gets an unfavourable response when they write to him in 8 weeks can he complain to the financial ombudsman?
Please let me know your thoughts.
Many thanks

The claim is in now so let it run, you can get a claims co if you want, they will charge a hefty % plus Vat on any redress so this is not needed, wait and see what response you get from Lloyds and we can help you take it from there.0

They don't ask trick questions. I'm surprised they asked what he wanted the money for, as they usually ask that when you ask for a loan, not when you are complaining about PPI.
They will be persistent about your reason for complaining, saying you are entitled to it back is not a complaint reason you're just stating a thing you believe [which is wrong anyway, you are not claiming money back, you are complaining it was missold]
As amersall says, let us know what they say and we'll see if you need any help later on.
And do some reading about it so you know what to expect.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -
They were asking why you feel you were missold the PPI, just because you had PPI doesn't mean you are due a refund.0

It's not a trick question, it's a standard question to determine complaint reasons which they need in order to investigate, he's basically failed to give them any valid reasons as to why he feels he was mis-sold PPI so he's lucky they'll even look into it.0

Slightly different scenario here,
I hurriedly filled in an Egg PPI reclaim form recently, postmark of 23rd Aug 2012 and arrived in the post mid March 2013.
Before I start....Hands up, I did not check out this forum before filing in the form.
First letter acknowledged my complaint.
Second letter arrived today telling me they have refused my claim due to 2 of my answers on the questionnaire form.
Q5. I ticked the box to say I would not get any pay from my employer if i was off work. (I genuinely ticked the wrong box, I am a company director of my own business so I decide who does and doesn't get paid)
Q6. I stated I had no other funds to pay off the loan if I couldn't keep up the payments.
Well at the time Q6 was correct, I was converting a barn so funds were tight.
The truth is I felt that if I accepted the PPI then I would stand a better chance of getting the loan. This is listed as one of my reasons for being mis sold.
They say that they don't accept any of my reasons for mis selling as at the time of the sale, my answers to Q5 & Q6 show I needed a PPI as I didn't have any other means of repaying it.
Ok, I have been a bit of a prat with the form but now they say the case is closed and I have 6 months to take up a complaint with the financial ombudsman.
Sorry if this is in the wrong place but so many different PPI categories on here.0 -

That would be a good reason to reject the complaint as it indicates a need for cover.
So would that.Q6. I stated I had no other funds to pay off the loan if I couldn't keep up the payments.
Having a "feeling" is wrong suggests a mispurchase, not a missale. The truth is I felt that if I accepted the PPI then I would stand a better chance of getting the loan. This is listed as one of my reasons for being mis sold.0 -

Did you fill in this form by yourself? Because if you did, you missbought, you weren't missold.
Your option now is to take your complaint to the ombudsman but think about whether you paid single premium PPI.....hint hint.....Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -

Was it a loan, and was the cost of the PPI added to the loan so that you repaid it in with your loan repayments each month?
This is single premium PPI, and you would have paid interest on top of the cost of the cover itself.0
