in Credit cards
Hi
My 18yr old son recently shopped in Debenhams and at the checkout he was offered 10% discount on his purchases if he took out a Debenhams Credit Card. All they asked for was some form of ID so he presented them with his provisional driving license. They took the details, asked him to sign a couple of forms (of which he was not given a copy). He was just given a copy of a printed credit agreement which does not contain his signature. His credit limit is £1000. He does not have a bank account or regular income. He works a few hours a week in his local pub as he's a full time student. I personally feel Debenhams have acted irresponsibly but would like to know where I stand in making a formal complaint and to whom it should be directed.

Although irresponsible lending exists, I don't believe it applies here.
Debenhams regularly ask me if I want their card, I say "No" and they leave it there. Your son could have done exactly the same thing.
He signed a credit agreement, if he didn't know what was contained within that agreement he shouldn't have signed.
Why can't he just cancel the card? By all means lodge a complaint, but I doubt you'll get very far with it. What would you like the outcome of said complaint to be anyway?0 -

If your son is over 18, I don't believe you have any grounds to complain. He is an adult, entered into the contract willingly and you are not a party to that contract.
Your situation, even though he is your son, would be akin to me complaining to your bank objecting that you have taken out a credit card.43580 -
I applied for a debenhams card a few weeks ago, and i had to provide ID and fill in a form that stated my income, household income and monthly expenditure. Then I was given a copy of all my forms back and the form with my income details on it back.0

none at all - your son is an adult and his finances are none of your business.0 -

To be honest, they always try without mentioning the word "Credit" with card. It may not be illegal, but certainly deceitful.0 -
Not when they hand you a form with "Credit Agreement" at the top.
It's all about making sure you know what you're signing for. It is the customers responsibility to know.0 -

Regardless, my point is that the person in question is legally an adult, thus if any complaint is to be made, it needs to be them making it.0
