Best Joint Account?

Hi all. We are looking at having a joint account for household bills etc. We have never had a joint account before. I have had a look at the main site guides but haven't spotted a particular reference.

I have retired and Mrs Wild_Rover is retiring in the summer so we want a joint account to pay a proportion of our superannuation pensions into from our own bank accounts and pay monthly/annual bills out of it. Maybe a joint credit card too.

Any suggestions from folks who have done this recently? We would be daft to ignore any potential "bonus" features/rewards that accounts might offer, so might also be happy to look at moving our existing individual accounts and/or credit cards (no outstanding credit card balances as always paid off each month).

As always, grateful for any "cunning plan" suggestions .

    all banks do joint accounts

are you unhappy with your present banks? do you not want to open one with them?

no credit cards do joint cards although the main a/c holder can get a second card

Hi Clapton. The individual accounts we have carry few if any "benefits". I was hoping to hear from folks who have recently changed - eg bonus if X quid paid in each month is out there but are there any accounts with particular advantages if "joint" ones? I read a while ago somewhere in a thread about an individual or a couple who had a number of accounts with, I think, the same bank and earned multiple cash bonuses each month by "churning" money between accounts. I was thinking about Santander because of cashback, but have also heard about poor customer service reviews.

Hi grumbler - I remember reading that thread but it seemed to me that it commented more on disadvantages of joint accounts in case of relationship breakdown. Given that we are coming up on 30 years of marriage, I'd hope that isn't going to be too much of a factor to take into account!

It was not about breakdown only. Joint account is fine if both your credit histories are equally good or bad. Otherwise a better one can be adversely affected.

I don't know any joint accounts that pay double bonus as against the same single account. The only advantage can be a joint travel insurance (Nationwide FlexAccount).

For a general information on best current accounts, regardless of joint/single, see MSE article: Best Bank Accounts

The advantage of Joint accounts tend to be that for the same fee you both get the benefits, or at least in my opinion.

If I were to have a joint account then it'd be the paid variety and then have free personal accounts (assuming you're keeping separate accounts).

There are ones with small cash bonuses that could be worth having depending on how much your time is worth to bounce the money around etc
