i have just updated my CV, as i'm facing losing my job sometime in the next 3 months.
on my laptop i'm using microsoft works. when i leave my CV i'm asked what type of file i want to save it as. here are the options
works document (wps)
works template (wpt)
rich text format (rtf)
text file (tst cvs)
HTML document (htm html htx)
word 2007 document (docx)
word 97-2003 document (doc)
i want to save it in the correct file so that when i aplly for jobs via email or upload my CV through jobsite, CV-library...etc
the person can read it even if they dont use microsoft works.

I would use none of the above, I send things like this as an Adobe pdf.

pdf's tend to show with the same layout you put it in across more devices and platforms and prints easily as you authored it to appear. I have never come across anyone who can't easily access pdf's no matter what they use.

Easily created for free, I use this freeware program that creates a pdf printer driver on your pc, just print your CV and select the Bullzip printer instead.

Some agencies don't like PDFs - they like to be able to remove the candidate's contact details before forwarding to their clients.

.doc or .docx are safe bets.

.doc is safest (in terms of compatibility); .docx will probably yield a smaller file size and include more features (that you likely aren't using anyway).

I would have said that an rtf file was better than a doc file for compatibility, although a doc file would be fine.

I wouldn't use docx, because it won't work with earlier versions of Word which quite a few companies might well be using.

Maybe for agencies, I read it that the op was mainly applying directly.

Anyway .doc, yes but also be aware if you have any author details setup as they will get carried in the document too.

oh and if your putting a contact email address on, go setup a new free gmail one that can be abandoned if it gets spammed by agencies in the future and call it something sensible. CV's with email addresses like peteandsharon@internet.com or marionluvschocolate@isp.com don't look good. :rotfl:

If you are going the agency route then I'd use .DOC (it's generally the most accepted format)
I'd keep an .RTF and a .TXT version hand as well (the .txt is good for a quick copy / paste into some on-line application forms without all the formatting codes .doc's tend to bring along)

But .PDF's are good if your are sending directly to an prospective employer.

I usually send a .PDF together with a link for the .DOC version or the other way around why applying directly to someone in a company.

as for email I own a few domains but I always use cv@* or resume@* or sometimes if i'm seding to anagency I use <agency name>.CV@* it makes it easier to filter out the replies and bin them if they start to spam. It also let's you know which companies sell your details to 3rd parties. ^_~
