Firstly my condolences. My father died in Spain and had money in a Spanish bank account – maybe my reading of the OP is incorrect but that seems to be the same in your case (regardless of the status of any UK banks as they are totally unrelated for inheritance purposes). I think it is standard practice for all accounts to be "frozen" after death - both in the UK and Spain so essentially they are non accessible except through legal channels.



You need to able for a grant of probate to establish the credentials of the individual making enquiries in Spain and seeking the benefit of any asset or bank account of a deceased person.
The bank will usually require formal documentary evidence to establish the standing of the Executor, and any other supporting documents required, including the Account Number and Grant of Probate, all to be translated into Spanish and verified by a Notary as true translations from the English originals.



You then need a solicitor to provide Power of Attorney to a Spanish legal colleague who would make the enquiry directly.



My experience with Spanish banking and legal system was awful and in general UK solicitors firms have no idea what to do so you need someone with experience in this field.
