The image below is probably typical of a common domestic gas supply

My question is with regards to the shut off on the pipe to the left - would it typically be quarter, half or a full turn to isolate the gas supply to off?

Quarter turn. You will find it probably won't go any further than that.0

A quarter will do it. It shouldn't allow you to move it much more in any case0

Just pull it until it stops.
In fact, the yellow sticker right next to it shows you exactly which position is which.
