the worst thing ever was the introduction of tax credits. i don't deny that the intention was right, but all it acheived was to allow employers to pay less and for the taxpayer to pick up the slack.
the burden of people that cannot work is high enough, without allowing people to choose to work fewer hours in order to naxinise income.

the only winners are the big businesses that choose to pay minimum wage in order to maximise profit

The cost of housing is the biggest issue here.

    ^^^^^ well said.

It is time for regional caps on rents. Taxpayers should not be subsidising the pensions/bank balances of landlords.

It is also time to build 3M social housing homes including a return to high rise apartments. Not a mix of private homes for sale and social, just 3M social housing homes. It would instantly start to improve the economy and would provide sustainable incomes for councils via rent and council tax.

Which areas would you choose to build these ghettos ?
Where are you proposing to borrow the money from and how do you intend to repay it ?

we have had a maaive building programme going on ... based on the promise of regeneration. that was all halted when the recession hit. we now have large amounts of pribate lets at a lower rate than the LHA. but theyre all 2 and 3 beds. there are NO 1 bed lets in either private or social housing. its the singletone that are suffering
the link that richie provided shows that working age people in my area are £603 worse off. and that hits the benefit dependant the hardest

How come the largest proportion by far 'state pension' 46% is hardly discussed?

Why is this area not facing cuts in proprtion with other people on minimum benefits and the most vulnerable in society.

Nothing against pensioners but is this fair?

Agreed, but if they took a fair share the cuts would be much less severe for the most vulnerable

Unlike Obsourn (and maybe yourself judging by your comment) I am intelligent enought to realise that there is good debt and bad debt. Building 3M homes would generate its own income in the form of rents and council taxes, and have a knock on income generation in the form of income tax, from the people who build the houses, in the form of VAT/Fuel Duty etc etc from the spending of those salaries.
The borrowing of money that would kick start the economy and generate further growth is what is needed and it is not, despite what Cameron and Osbourn have brainwashed the stupid into believing, a bad thing.

There are thousands of brownfield sites across the UK that could be built on, and in areas where housing is needed but this land doesn't exist then it would have to be built on greenbelt land.

    .

Only if the new tenants don't need HB and council tax deductions to pay for them.
