Advice needed for buying a used car

  • When I first read the OP, I was like ... no V5C? meh ... so what? Just apply for it.

This morning I spoke to a guy from work who it turns out bought a car a month or so ago from ebay with no V5C. Yesterday I saw him talking to the police outside the office and only got to asking what it was all about today. Turned out it was stolen, and only came to light when he picked up a speeding ticket. It was siezed. He now has no car, no money, and no comeback.
  • Thanks for the replies.

He got the car MOTed last month so its has a whole years MOT and Its has 6 months tax left.

From what I have been told he would of had to have the log book when he got the MOT done. I saw the receipt for the MOT.

You don't need the log book to M.O.T a car.

And he has to explain to the police how he happens to be driving round in a stolen car. OK, sooner or later they will accept his version of events, but it's a lot of hassle that none of us really needs.

No V5, no sale. No exceptions.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
  • Thanks everyone for the advice! much appreciated! ... I've told him that I am happy to wait a week or so to see IF the logbook arrives. And also that we don't expect him to take it off the market, if someone else comes along in the mean time and is happy to take it without the logbook then let them but we need the logbook and car.

    Cheers!
