Hello
Me and my partner are looking at renting very shortly
Now im a bit worried. My Girlfriend has a crystal clear credit rating and has always paid off her outstanding balances etc etc.
Me on the other hand. I went a bit off track and fell behind with Lloyds and a phone bill. My lloyds account is now settled and closed, nothing logged on my credit file from them
The Orange bill on the other hand, they have logged a default last september for the value of £105.
If me and my partner want to rent. Will they credit check us both? Will this cause an issue?
Can everything not go in my partners name for X years till the default starts to fade off?
Or, will i be ok with references, regular income, everything paid off and credit back on track for a year now with no overdraft etc etc.
Any give any advice?
Thanks

Everything in theory can go in the name of your partner, but you will have no right of occupation in the property should you split up. In addition, the LL will probably get annoyed if they find you living there undeclared, and if you declare yourself they will probably want to check you.
However, don't panic. The sort of credit checks that LAs do are not like banks. You normally only need to worry if you have CCJs on file. A missed payment for a financial product is much less likely to be an issue. You aren't specific over what actually happened, but it sounds like it didn't escalate to the CCJ stage.
If I were you I would just approach it as normal.0 -
Best to be open I think ,I when people are open with me about credit history I think it is a reflection on their honesty and does not in general stop me renting to them.
You may have more of a problem with a letting agent as they follow fixed rules but as has been said in the previous post I don,t think you will have a problem on a check
For our peace of mind or can check yourself free through experian or you can google tenant credit checks and choose a company to run one for you for under £100 -
Like others have said, always best to be honest.
We've just been accepted for a new rental property - my credit rating is fine but OH had a CCJ. We told them this up front and have been accepted and the checks have come back ok - can't say it wasn't hairy though waiting for a decision0 -
Thanks for all the responses.
No, it didn't get to CCJ stage. I literally paid it a couple of days after the default was logged, which can be seen by the default and settle date on my credit check. Orange are satisfied that everything was paid in full and settled only a few days after the default was placed on there.
Yeah i'm open and honest about it anyway. Don't see a point trying to hide it as it will always come out anyway.
Thanks again. Starting to make me feel a little at ease.
Such a shame i had this logged against me, would have gone down the mortgage route otherwise. O well after it drops off in 6 years, we will hopefully have some good references to back me us up :j0
