Tracing an IP address

Hiya all,

One for the techs out there!

I need to trace an IP address from an email ( Gmail )

My account was hacked and a number of emails were deleted so the only email I have left is one where I have forwarded it onto another email address with the original email below it, is this still possible?

I am using hotmail btw if that helps

So if I'm reading this right - you don't have access to the original email, just the forwarded copy? If this is the case then it is not possible to get the header details from the forwarded mail I'm afraid, as they aren't included.

Also, if the email originated from a Gmail address you wouldn't be able to get the sender's IP address anyway as GMail strips them out.

Gmail, nothing you can do. In fact I think hotmail stopped putting ip addresses into headers a while back too.

Unfortunalty even if you could find the IP for an old email the chances are either the email was sent by typing into the Gmail web client, or if sent from a device the IP will have been re-assigned to many other people since the sending.

Neither of wich will be accessable to you without a legally valid demand to access the service providers logs.
  • Many thanks for this, its a pain

Actually its for a case I am thinking of reporting to the police anyway so by the sounds of it the request would have had to be made by them regardless

    Many thanks for the replies

Having just tried tracking one, it looks like that is the case, unless someone I know is in Bristol is actually in a Microsoft office in the US.
