SNP want to keep the pound AND the BOE as a lender of last resort

Salmond could define the terms of independence, but he won't because those terms would point to a medium term future that is financially worse than the current arrangement.
He's tacitly admitting that Scots aren't nationalistic enough to want nationalism if there is a cost, so is trying to sell some fairy tale about Scotland becoming a new Norway, with absolutely no rationale as to how that will happen.
People have fought bloody and costly wars for freedom, but the SNP apparently don't even thinks Scots will risk jeopardising free prescriptions for independence so they just have to be lied to instead.
I think people on both sides of the border would respect honesty, but apparently that characteristic is something that SNP politicians are as incapable of demonstrating as their English counterparts. Which is a pity.0 -
Given that only about 1 in 3 residents of Scotland are in favour of independence, discussing the practicalities of separation would be a bit premature.
1/3rd of the population isn't 'only' that is a very considerable number of people and proportion. The conservatives 'only' got 32% of the vote in the last election, does that mean they shouldn't have bothered to put together a manifesto beforehand?
I'm not suggesting that we should have a fully planned out separation plan before the referendum; Ideally I'd like to see a vote to see if they even want to see a plan put together first, but if people are voting on something in a referendum then I think it is wrong that we are forcing them to do it with no idea what they are actually voting for.Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. I would prefer that Scotland took independence... would also kill the Labour party in the UK overnight too.
I'd be careful what you wish for. We'd certainly see a change in the British political balance but what would likely happen is Labour would move further towards the centre and the conservatives would move further to the right to combat the current threat from UKIP.
The conservatives might get one, possibly two, easy election wins but it wouldn't last long before things adjust.Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Blackwhite bellyfeel double plus good...0 -
It seems likely that you're right. Polls seem to rest at about a balance of 3:5 quit:stay.HAMISH_MCTAVISH wrote: »
Independence simply ain't going to happen.
That might even result in a new miracle - getting A Salmond to !!!!!!....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Lots of Scots who have moved south as well...

Why don't the English get a vote on whether we would like to see Scotland (and Northern Ireland and Wales) as independent nations no longer supported by our taxes? How many would vote for the union if the cost to their poskets was accurately disclosed?I think....0

It feels like baby and bathwater syndrome to me.
I'm sure there are plenty of average people in Scotland who feel like decision making in Westminster is a million miles away. The feeling wouldn't be any different in the North East or parts of Wales etc.
To embark on a complete separation to fix things is however an extreme way of going about things.
Gradual devolvement of more local control is perhaps a more progressive way of achieving a different society in Scotland. They already have shown this with things like free higher education etc.
I hope the independence referendum doesn't become a protest vote.0 -
