Finding very old bank account

Hi
my mum has just told us about a bank account she remembers her father (who she never saw again and only met once) opening for her when she was 10 yrs old which she could then not touch until she was 21 yrs (it was to buy her a house). Due to a very closed family and lots of tragedy's this was forgotten about/never mentioned again.
My mum is now in her 80's and most of the family are dead, but we do think there is a document referring to a security at a bank which is with her half sisters son (we are hoping we can get it off him).
If we don't or do what is the process to finding out about it? Also what would happen to the money if it is still there, would it have earned any interest?
thanks

You seem to be talking about an account which existed 60 or so years ago. Some queries on these boards have difficulty tracing an account 10-12 years old in these circumstances, so without any evidence I would think your chances are remote. If you locate the rumoured documentation, there might be some more chance as you would at least know where to ask.
As to the interest question, that would depend entirely what type of account (or "security") it is. So you should probably wait until the search for the document has been done. Also don't forget that in the 1950s an amount like £100 was considered a lot of money whereas today it's not remarkable. So best not to expect anything really.0 -
I did say that to her, £100 would have bought a nice house in 1940 so we won't be booking her cruise yet!!!! lol
I do know what bank it was in as there was only one in the village she lived in (the same bank is still there), does this improve our chances of finding something?0 -
Has she contacted the bank to ask them?0

We are waiting too see if we get the document also I have had to request a copy of her birth certificate as she didn't know her dad's name. All very odd and secretive but I think many families had skeletons in the cupboards in those days.0
