Where do we stand?

So here's the situation. My partner and I have been saving to buy a house this year, and with this in mind renewed our tenancy in February for another 6 months. However, despite paying the admin fee back then (and obtaining a receipt) we have not had our new contracts through for us to sign. I've chased this up several times but they have not materialised.
So, we have now had an offer accepted on a house and, all going well, completion could be as soon as the 13th of May (we're not counting on this but it's what we've been told!).
My question is, where do we stand with regard to ending the tenancy agreement prematurely? We technically don't have one, so are they able to impose a penalty for this? Would this fluff our chances of getting our damage deposit back?
I'd appreciate your views

I'm no expert, but if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't give notice until you've exchanged on your new property.
Alternatively, riskier option, just give them 2 months written notice e.g. Mid June(?) and see what they say?!0 -
Thanks for that, it's what my partner suggested, but I wasn't so sure. I think we may have to forfeit our damage deposit but it might be worth it if we can get out easily and save 2 months of rent.0
