chip and pin

I made a purchase by chip and pin the retailer keyed wrong amount they went back into my account a few hours later and took out money again. I reported to my bank Nationwide who said it was ok. I wrote letter to complain Nationwide have came back with apology and £50 sweetener but cant understand how retailer was able to get access into my account again without verification ???

Odds on 2nd trans was card holder not present. Any retailer can do this as they ALL keep your card details.

I take it you underpaid, hence why they took the 2nd amount when they realised.

    Not the banks fault.

  • Yes underpaid first time but second is for remainder but can retailer still go back and gain access without consent.I dont mind paying as they have been short changed but surely they should contact Bank first, Bank give me £50 cause they didn`t investigate properly.

They did contact the bank.... They took the money.

Would have been better if they had contacted you, but guess that they did not have your contact details.

A bank will not provide a retailer with your details. So if they did not have yours then the only option is to either write it off (no idea on the amount) or debit your bank account and wait for you to complain.

It would have been a easy chargeback on a unrecognised transaction. Unless something you said about being undercharged for the origonal debit ment that they decided that it would reject and would end up redebiting you anyway.

Look on the £50 as a bonus and remember next time to be honest ;)

Looks like the balancing transaction was unauthorised but nevertheless contractually due.

It was wrong of the merchant to have used your details in this way. If you had disputed it then you could have got your money back - but then you would have been duty bound to go back to the retailer to pay the balance of what you owed.

When I was a merchant some years ago, we would never have put through a second amount without contacting the customer. If we didn't have the contact details (we usually did) then we would have written it off.

Makes a mockery of 'all sales are final'. If you paid cash, it should not make any difference - unless you were aware that the debit price keyed into the terminal was (or could be) in error.

Again it is the consumer who finds he has to remain vigilant.
