Converting cubic metres: how to?

Hello,

I'm not sure this is the best place for this post but if not perhaps the moderators would re-home it for me?

If you have a figure, say, 70 cubic metres, how do you calculate roughly what square metreage this is on the ground? Sorry I know this is probably a v. dim question - but any help and perhaps a worked example would be great.

It's to do with the amount by which you're allowed to extend a property (permitted development) without obtaining planning permission.

Many thanks in advance.
Regards,

    Volume is lengtht x width x hight (l x w x h)

Area (on the ground) is length x width (l x w)

so, as albertross says devide the volume by the height to get the area of ground covered.

eg if you want a 3m high extension

70m/3m is about 23 square metres. The length and width of your extension must then multiply together to be less than 23 so eg 5m x 4m floor would be ok
