Be careful transfering from BT to Virgin

I now get Virgin Broadband and calls via a BT line. Previously my calls were
with BT also. Everything seemed to have been transfered fine, however
when I got my latest phone bill it said that I was still on BT Option 3 package
and so was charged £20 instead of £10. When I queried it I was told
that I still on Option 3 because I hadn't told them to change it. This
was despite them sending a letter confirming that I was leaving BT for my calls and that I didn't have to do anything else.
They said that Virgin should have told me to contact them as BT were too
busy to deal with automatically changing the call plan unless they told to.
In other words they weren't interested. So be warned and remember to
contact BT yourself when switching. I tried phoning Virgin but went round
in circles trying to get to the right dept so I guess I'll be sending two letters
of complaint.

I presume, from what you've said, that the Virgin is a CPS (carrier pre-select) whereby you still pay line rental to BT. In which case, you can make calls through BT if you wish by dialling the 1280 prefix before your number. This also means that the BT tariff applies as it did before, and therefore you are responsible for changing down if you decide that that is best, as is usually the case.

In any case, I believe you will be better off making your 084x/087x calls via BT as VM charge more than BT. This is not affected by which Option you are on as they all have the same 084/087 rates.

Its your responsibility to tell BT you want to change your option and most decent Telecom Call Suppliers would remind you to do so when you switch to them.

I guess your now on one of these not so competive deals.http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/noncable.html

EG. You now pay a wacking 6p connection charge for every chargeable call.
