Contents Insurance for Renters - Help?

I am trying to get contents insurance only for my belongings. I rent a property with 3 others so only wish to insure my things (the other girls don't want insurance).

I have used comparison sites which have come up with various quotes from Barclays, Endsleigh, Admiral etc but when I try to buy these insurance it says on the details I have provided they cannot give me insurance....no explanation.:(

Can anyone advise? I want to insure £30,000 worth of belongings, live in a 1950's semi detached house and want as low an excess as possible and have the basic in terms of security in the property.

This all seems rather confusing....has anyone managed to get renters insurance or had similar issues?

Hi, when you say you are renting a property with three other people is it one building with four seperate appartments each with their own individual secure access or are the four of you sharing a property with some communal areas ??

If it is the latter you may struggle to find affordable insurance.

Individual insurance for sharers is difficult to get unless you have your own locked door etc. The likes of Endsleigh tend to be best due to their specialism in students/ young professionals but other local brokers may be able to help.

Even if you do get cover there will almost certainly be an endorsement that theft claims must have signs of forced or violent entry/ exit due to your sharing with non-family members
  • I did try Endsleigh but they said they couldn't provide me with insurance.

It is 4 of us sharing one house but each of the bedrooms has a lock on it (we all have our own keys).

I do have a lock on my door but none of the insurance companies have asked me to provide that detail when I ask for a quote.

If I can't get insurance for my contents in my rented property, then if there a policy I can get that allows me to cover my stuff when I am out of the home solely?

Are you sure it's not the £30K value which is causing the problem? I live alone and my contents don't come to that.
  • I added up the value of my things and that's what they come to. That's clothes, shoes, furniture, household items, books, cds and jewllery.

As I said I am not sure what the issue is as they won't tell me why they won't cover me. Do you have rental insurance for a shared house?
  • When I was renting I used HomeLet. That's who my landlord recommended and had no problems. https://homelet.co.uk/
  • Thanks for the HomeLet site. They are charging me £400 per year which seems a little steep though.

No, as I stated, I live alone and my full contents don't come anywhere near that.

I suspect that most 'shared house' insurance policies are designed for people with lower value totals?

Wow £30k?! Are you really sure? If that's a couple of high value items, it might be best insuring those seperately? I've had tenants insurance from Endsleigh before although my contents come nowhere near that....

  • A recent InsuranceQuotes.com survey found that only one-third of respondents had rental insurance. While it's probably a ploy to get more individuals to buy rental insurance from InsuranceQuotes.com, it does raise the question of why more people should at least think about this.
