Small Business - What could I do?

If you start a small business, you will be working twice the hours you are working now, for half the pay. You would be better off staying in your job and starting something small on the side. As you are asking for ideas, it seems you don't have a plan. It would be madness to chuck your job up.

On the dog walking idea, we had a pet sitting business as a sideline for a while. Your income is limited (we would only walk one client's dogs at a time), petrol costs and wear and tear on a car are prohibitive and clients generally don't want to pay a lot. It would be a nice sideline for a parent looking to earn a small amount during school hours or some semi-retired looking to earn fun money but as a full time thing it would be really hard.

Do people actually use virtual assistants though? Rather, is there enough of a business in being one to be better value than a minimum wage real assistant?

There seem to be regular projects looking for "virtual assistants" on Freelancer.com, but they all require the applicants to be female and broad-minded with a cam.:rotfl:
  • Yes they do, if you know where to advertise you'll get lots of business, i've used a VA many times, and I know many many business owners who do x

I agree with the Virtual Assistant role. I am setting up my own online business and considering doing some VA roles to help bulk up my income.

Keep your job, but advertise your services for free on something like Gumtree. I advised two people the same thing who asked my advice last month. They both now have enough hours to fill their week with well known Natonal firms. They know they will be paid.

Alternately you could go with anyone of the several freelance agencies, but they take a percentage from your bid price.
