Pregnant with cold and no voice

Options
Hello, I'm currently 34+1 and for the last week I've been gradually losing my voice. Had really bad indigestion for a few weeks which I (and the doc) thought was burning my throat hence the lost voice. I was given tables to help with that which it has and my voice is gradually coming back but it's now developed into a cold. I don't want to go back to the doctors as they make such a fuss when you try and make an appointment and I'm feeling too awful to get down to the chemist so wondering if anyone has any miracle home remedies I can try?

I have a blocked nose, sore head but no sore joints (luckily) and I've been trying ice-cream, hot cordial with honey and vinegar and I'm about to try Olbas Oil in boiling water to hopefully do enough to scent the room that I can stop breathing through my mouth (and making the throat worse).

  • Hi

Im in last trimester and had horrendous flu, followed by cold that has lasted a month.

I found honey and fresh lemon juice in hot water brilliant but you need a mug every couple hours. Drink at least pint of water every hour - your floating but really clears everything out. Take paracetamol for aches. I used vicks sinex spray at night so I could sleep.

Humidifier is great at night, I got one from argos and it was a life saver.

Nice warm baths help, as does obus oil and vapour rub.

Another one for honey and lemon in hot water (my mum swears by a drop of whisky in it as well but perhaps not while you're pregnant :rotfl:). If you're planning on doing the olbus oil/vicks etc in hot water then try in a big bowl and sit over it with a towel over your head for a bit.
Make sure you're warm and toasty as well, I find that works for me better than anything else. Hope you feel better soon x

Thanks for your replies, I will have to get the husband to nip to the shops on his way home tonight :-) While he's doing that I will steam my head(!) and have a hot bath - triple pronged approach HAS to work!

A teaspoon of whisky won't hurt either if I can bring myself to do it - hate the taste but if it will work...or at least let me sleep...

I hadn't realised we could use any sinus sprays, I'd had this in week 7 and everything said no including Olbas Oil but I guess it must be safer as you get on a bit. I've also just remembered I have Sudafed here so I will go read the box - really just assumed it was a no but I have everything crossed now.

I will also be praying it doesn't turn into a month long thing, trying to finish up at work and it's the last thing I need.

Beconase nasal spray is often prescribed so is fine. Most things are fine they are just not specifically licensed for use in pregnancy as there has been no tests done.. very few pregnant women want to take part in clinical trials which may or may not harm their babies.

I use the same stuff I normally use for a cold, sinex, cold and flu capsules, strepsils extra.. I can't use olbas oil it aggravates my eczema

I found ginger cordial worked quite well when I got a stinking cold while pregnant... didn't work on hubby having the man flu variant, or elder daughter having snot and wrath out of the eyeballs though.

Good call, that reminded me I bought ginger wine from Holland and Barratt at Xmas and she said it was good for a cold (and indigestion, wish I'd remembered that one..)

Again, thanks for all your replies, very helpful.

Onion juice for coughs. Chop an onion then sit it in a little water overnight. Drain the water in to a cup. Not a great taste, but I found it good for phlegmy coughs.

Thanks Mrs Imp, I'm a big kid when it comes to onions though, to me they are poison and I pick them out of everything. I'll keep it in mind though if the lemon doesn't work - I'm getting close to the point of trying anything!
