Endsleigh home insurance...where do I stand?

I had home contents insurance on my last property which I left in December 2010. I called to cancel the policy in Mar/Apr 2011 and they stated it would be cheaper for me to let the polcy lapse and that they would put a note on the system to cancel it.
They are still taking payments 2 years later (I should have noticed I know!!!).
I have spoken to them and they are raising a formal complaint but basically they have been covering me for a policy for an address I can prove I no longer live at, and have probably been sending renewal letters to this address (which I had told them I no longer live at!). They have the correct telephone number and email account but have not contacted me over this time period using either.
IF (and who knows) they conclude that I can only pay a cancellation fee and cancel the policy without offereing these previous charges back, is this legal?
Thanks, R.

It will be wrong for them to have advised it'll lapse and they then renew it.
Post is still considered the best form of communication by law, if you move address you should really forward your mail for at least 6 months rather than hoping that people will use email or phone0 -

We changed all our addresses with the companies we use regularly and checked for post at the old address for 3 months ensuring we changed the address of any post still going to our old address. This has been sufficient for all other company correspondance. I did not give Endsleigh the change of address since they stated they would cancelling the policy!
You are right it was wrong of them to advise this and then NOT do it, but I'm concerned they'll deny all knowledge of this phonecall.
Guess I'll see what happens.
Thanks for the response though:)0 -

Most insurers/ broker record all phone calls. If they dont or arent able to find the call for some reason (and you can prove you did call) then the FOS doesnt look favourably on insurers0
