Replace cast iron soil stack.

Hello.

I need to replace an old cast iron soil stack.
The branch part of the stack has started to break-up which i think was due to the very cold weather we had. The stack goes from the ground to the top of the roof-line and has only 1 branch connected to it from the wc which is about 1 foot from it.
I live in Luton,Beds and would like an idea of what the cost will be as i dont know if its a builder or a plumber i would need.
Thanks for any help/advice given.

Pull it down and replace with plastic?

The most expensive bits from when I was looking was the joints/bends.
Long straight sections are pretty cheap.

It's not that easy to just pull down 'cos of the weight. When ours had started to rot i only replaced the top half with plastic, the bottom half had not started to rot and went straight into the ground and was cemented in. I didn't want to start going into the drain so left it. When we were trying to lower the top half i had it tied up with rope so it could be lowered slowly.

Going to have a similar problem at some time in the future with heavy cast iron guttering.

Don't replace the whole thing. Sever the soil pipe a couple of feet agl then replace the rest in plastic and use a universal coupler to join 'em up. Job cost iro £ 450.

Only be short lengths and makes a very satisfying noise when it hits the concrete though. :D

    Thank you for the replies.

The pipe from the ground upto the branch is ok.
The branch seems to be clay, had a better look yesterday and the branch has a 8-10 inch crack from wc connection going down to the collar that joins the cast iron down part.
The house was built in 1940 and i have lived here 29 years and was there when i moved in.
Will i need a builder for this work and has anybody got any companies that they could reccomend in the Luton area as i have not got a clue who to go with.

Do cast iron pipes have any scrap value?
