ebay dispute escalation

If I open a dispute, ebay says this on their solve a problem page:

Is that escalation automatic or do I have a choice to escalate it or not?
Reason I ask is that the manufacturers are still mulling over repairing it for a cost but they have given me no firm decision yet as to whether they will or won't yet alone any estimate of costs. Obviously if it goes off for repairs it will be longer than 8 days and I don't want it being automatically escalated if there are still other things going on.
How do I handle this?
Thanks.

It only escalates if you ask it to.0

Yes, as tech says, it won't escalate unless you ask it to. But do be aware it will eventually time out.0
