right thing using the solicitor for confirmation? (scotland)

I'm currently going through the process of sorting out my late fathers estate. I live in England and he died in Scotland so a lot of stuff has involved research and time on the phone. However although it is a much smaller estate I would say that if you have the time its certainly possible to do most of the work without the need to pay a solicitor. Everyone I've spoken to has been immensely helpful.
Just to pick up on a point made by madbadrob above, to get executor status (which I actually see you don't now need as you are named in the will) in Scotland it does need an application to the Sheriffs Court but again you don't need a solicitor for this. I was helped through the process myself by an excellent Sheriffs Clerk at the court in Jedburgh, you just need to ask in many cases.0 -
