Are new builds really that bad?? Everyone is warning me off them

As title says, everyone I know has told me not to buy a new build as they say
1. It will not be worth as much as I pay for it.
2. There are usually a lot of problems with new builds (shoddy work when being built)
I've looked round 2 new builds and both looked very lovely. In fact I thought they were better value than some of the other houses I've seen. For example the new build I saw was bigger and generally much nicer inside than a house of the same value. (gardens were same size)
Is there anyone who is FOR new builds or if you are against then why?
What if the new build was sold to us for say much less than the asking price (eg. they ask for £300K but we offer £260 and its accepted? (maybe this is v.unrealistic though!!))

People talk a lot of tosh about newbuilds, especially on here so get ready.
Like with all housing there are good ones and bad ones. Some are built out of plasterboard and are cramped and others are built to immensely high standards and are good value for money.
Judge it yourself, don't be out off a house you like by some of the naysayers on here.0 -

We moved into a new build 7 years ago, it has been great. Builder was a small local company, not one of the mass produced houses and our houses on the estate have all kept value and increasing - we stay in a national park area in Scotland so not the usual city houses. I would far rather buy new than second hand. When we were buying nobody offered any less but again its Scotland where things are different. There is no reason why you cant do a deal, especially if the houses are slow in moving.0

I'm for them, when they are the right house for you. I purchased a new build last autumn, and moved in right before Christmas. Overall I'm really happy with my house - it has all the space I need, a garden and parking in a nice area for a reasonable price. The development is a small one, and without any possibility of any further building.
I also got to have the house the way that I wanted it - which was the major attraction for me. I had planned on buying a house that needed gutting and re-doing so that I could do it how I wanted, but this would have cost me an awful lot more money.
I do agree that some new builds are overpriced, poorly built etc., but that is just a massive generalisation that many people apply to all new build houses. You need to choose your house based on your own personal wants and circumstances, the individual house that you are looking at.0 -
There's a new "estate" of 14 new builds going up near me. The whole lot is on the plot of land that used to belong to a pretty nice place that's been knocked down.
Given they're all 3 beds ranging from 350-425K and I am buying a 20 yr old 4 bed detached for under 300K less than 1/2 a mile away, I conclude that they have massive amounts of scope for discounting and worth nowhere near what they're asking.
They look pretty cool though - and remind me of "space invaders"

I know that area really well and those are some expensive houses considering how close it in to some less nice area such as Weecock Farm.
We bought a new build 16 years ago we extended and Have loved living in ever since. Good thing for us was as we all moved in at the same time we became great fiends with many of the neighbours.Save £12k in 25 No 49

Where we are , all the new builds are next door , literally to building sites , they have been this way since about 2002 , so a new build in Leighton Buzzard.....no way , a finished area , where the place has an identity , maybeNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

We are finding that the bedrooms are too small so are the gardens and the 2 I was interested in are £30k at least more than an older house. There is also no room to expandHave a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0

thats another thing , the gardens are all very `samey` and tiny
in our bracket anyway , 175-200k
i suppose a new build that is an established area might be OK but then , it wouldnt really be a new build i suppose!Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0
