  • Hi Rolo

I found the Windmill Press papers to be good. That's what they used in my daughter's school. Here's a link

To be honest (and i'm sure you will have heard this before) the schools really do give them enough guidance without parents buying additional papers. I borrowed some papers of a friend who's child's school used different source material and copied them so my daughter would have more exposure, but it wasn't necessary, She had no tutor and no extra papers bought and she passed with flying colours.(feb 2013)

Not meaning to start a whole discussion, but if children are targeted to pass a particular test, it may not actually be a good indicator for the new school of the child's ability

I'm sure you're elder child may be able to help your 11 year old with form and whatnot?
  • I'm using windmill press too along with school papers. My DD is doing great so far. Can't believe how fast it's approaching though. Only seems like yesterday she was in p1. Would like her to go to Friends.

Hi, my son is due to take the GL assesment in November...I am still slightly confused about how to get an idea if he is obtaining high enough scores to get into his first choice as the tests he is completing now are marked in percentage and I don't know how to calculate the standardised scores etc that the GL assesments are marked by. He will be eleven years and four months old when he takes the test in November.

I don't think you can work that out easily. You'd have to look at how he is doing now and compare him with children his age now to gauge how he's doing. The PiE and PiM scores, or whatever assessment your school does, will give you a reasonable guide to how he will do relative to his peers. They are also standardised.

This is not easy to do at all. Apparently it depends on the number of children who will sit the test and their chronological age the day they sit the test. I have also been told that children are grouped together according to their d.o.b so all the older children are grouped together etc. if your child is in a group who do exceptionally well this may have a negative impact on your son. For your information.....this year there was a grand total of 10% between an A grade and a D grade. Good luck to you and your little boy.

It's time to roll out the ole normal distribution curve I think!
The percentages under the curve represent the percent of people with scores in that range.
It is true that, in raw marks, there may be 10% between an A and a D. That 10% doesn't represent just 10% of the cohort however.
There's an equation for converting the raw to standardised marks which I'll spare you. The average raw score must be calculated first, so you can't know ahead of the test how to match raw and standardised scores. As a rough estimate, anything north of 75% raw marks should be getting into A territory, or 105-110 standardised score, but don't hold me to that. It also depends on how old the child is, how hard the test was etc.

    leftie,

Not at all convinced that the AQE scores conform to a normal distribution in the last couple of years anyway. Do you have data or are you assuming the curve to be normal? I would love to see the actual curve. I reckon it has 2 peaks.

Did we have this debate last year?
All SATs follow the standard distribution curve. If the sample size is too small it may deviate from the statistical distribution but I reckon the sample size is large enough for this not to happen (or else it cannot be a SAT and the use of standardised scores is meaningless.) There are 7000 GL candidates and 9000 AQE candidates. That is plenty to establish a normal distribution. Even though there may be a large number of candidates with a particular raw score, age standardisation will distribute them.

Does anyone know the lowest AQE score recently accepted by Wallace and Friends? Has it changed from their most recently printed prospectus in 2012? They appear to have accepted scores from 106 and over - is this correct? A friend of mine, whose DD started Friends in September 2012, told me the lowest score accepted into Friends last year was 110 and another friend told me Wallace' lowest score was 106. Friend's prospectus state 106, any insight would be appreciated. :D
