This girl is, basically, completely normal and said what are completely normal things for people her age to say! Ironically she was probably a very good choice to advise how normal adolescents think and act (although I'm unconvinced that her hair is representative)

Anybody who thinks that most teenagers don't use words like "fag" is living in dreamland, and I wouldn't assume that this girl is homophobic because of it.

Kids just say stupid things. I said some shocking things over time as a teenager, often simply without thinking and sometimes really cruel and definitely racist/homophobic/discriminatory, but I'm none of those things in reality and wasn't as a teenager either. Often I just wanted to impress people or be funny and those topics make it easy.

The difference is that they weren't on twitter. But if we'd had twitter then, they may well have been!

While I reluctantly agree, this is pretty much not 'abnormal' here and now, I think putting it into a context of time has been interesting, and place is too. It does have to be the norm.

I think it's another example of the loss of real or worthy aspiration for people and its impact upon us as individuals and a society.

I'll try again. In the name of 'tolerance and inclusiveness' we seem to be delivering a typical daily mail backlash against what is only 'real' teenage behavoiur, saying things that are controversial to seem 'big' to one's mates is hardly unusual.

The vast majority of teenagers are pretty well behaved and socially adjusted...and to be honest they are not a huge issue for the law enforcement community. Where the police need to build more rapport is with the community where they are naturally seen as 'the enemy' not to trusted, those who drink cider, hang around on street corners and ride mini-motos. I can't see any point in having a 'youth commissioner' if it is not to gain rapport with these groups.

Yes they could appoint a girl scout model citizen role model but I can't see what good that would do.

I think - but don't know - that this is where the ex Gang members do a great job in community liaison.

This may not have been appropriate in Ann Barnes's area, I'm not suggesting that she should have employed such a person, if it were inappropriate. The right person has to be someone with credibility to both sides. A difficult choice, and Ann Barnes made the wrong choice.

Yes, agree. And actually the words used would indicate a different job.

What appalling interview skills Ann Barnes has. She seems to be amazingly out of touch with how to employ anyone. I thought ALL employers these days were checking social media, let alone a job which is designed to be high profile, to be one of working with various types of young people, various races, and various sexual preferences (and older ones too - she needed to be able to talk to the police after all to advise them - what credibility would she have in talking to, say, a Black copper about young Black people?).

Whatever you think of this girl (and I stand by my views) Ann Barnes is responsible for this stunt and shows awful judgment and a huge lack of sense and sensibility.
It would be interesting to know if that police force are not looking at social media for any o their recruitment. Of course, they cannot say if they are or not openly.

I'm not saying that all teens need to be saints, but someone being put in this job should be a role model, Ann Barnes is obviously a moron.

She obviously isn't a moron, even though she made a mistake and I personally have little time for her, as anyone of a reasonable intellect and capable of rational thought would appreciate.

The idea that getting some whiter than white 'perfect' teenager in that role is a great idea is hilarious :rotfl: you clearly know nothing about teenagers if you think they'd be seen as a role model rather than completely irrelevant and having no understanding of the people they most need to connect with and represent.

I cannot believe that grown adults are making vile coments about something this child wrote when she was 14. How many kids threatened to "burn the school down?" and they all potential arsonists? The media are responsible for this joke of a witch hunt. She is a young girl and applied to make a difference, she was showing off trying to be cool when she was younger. Her drunken antics were probably the result of a bottle of cider between 10 of them. I hope all the "holier that thou" brigate have never made a comment here or anywhere else that could come back and bite them,
Who the hell stalked their way through this young girls twitter to dig up her 14 year old ramblings? They should be arrested.

I'm not talking about some "whiter than white 'perfect' teenager", just someone who is a bit more of a natural leader, maybe from a struggling background who has managed to succeed in adversity, you don't need to be an utter gobsh!te like this girl to be "down with the kids" and someone they will admire.

The sort of "kids" that are going to be dealing with the police are not the ones that are going to be in the slightest influenced by a state appointed junior commsioner or whatever. It's just a waste of money PR gimmick.

Just a straight message of "you break the law and we will make your life a total misery" would be much more effective.

Even adults who commit all but the most serious crimes are considered to be reformed after a period of time and no longer have to declare those crimes to prospective employers.

That is not the case with regard to the police. Convictions are not spent.

Bluntly put, the responsibility for this mess goes to the person who hired her. Should have researched the candidates before offering a job.

When you put someone in front of the press in a public role you expect the press to do a google search and basic research.

It doesn't give teenagers a good name, and it reinforces the ridiculous stereotype that I've found myself adopting over the years. If it does that to me, when I'm fully aware that teenagers have probably looked bad to anyone older for far longer than I've been alive, then she's definitely not the right person to change opinions and stop the anti-social attitude.

Weren't the tweets from a few years ago, don't you think she may have changed her attitude? One good thing to come out of this is the warning to all young people of the dangers of the internet and how it can destroy your life icon9.gif
