do i need to have ethernet on both pcs in order to set up a network (as checked computers and only one has an ethernet network adapter)or is there a there a way round it where i can get away with just having ethernet on one of them.
if i need both of them to have ethernet how much at a guestimate does it cost to have it added to my pc
these may sound stupid questions but never attempted this b4 so know nothing about it.
thanks in advance

If you want an ethernet network then you need both PCs with ethernet ports
Assuming you have a free PCI slot then a card should cost less than £7 - installation is straightforward esp if you have Windows ME or XP
You will also need a crossover cableTANSTAAFL !0 -

soz if these questions sound stupid just never done it b4 so no nowt about it:)It is not what you give your friend, but what you are willing to give him that determines the quality of friendship. -- Mary Dixon Thayer0 -
I'm not an ace on this, but I think if you want to use the computers independently (ie with the other off) on the internet you would need a router.
You can share the connection more simply as above but the one that is connected to the internet will need to be on to allow the second. Also the connected one would need 2 ethernet cards, one to connect to modem, one for the crossover cable to the other. Unless your modem is USB0 -
cheers. i actually got a router( q-tec networking 790rh 4 port broadband router)and then discovered one pc didnt have ethernet and(unless ive read it wrong which wouldnt be difficult as i no nowt about networking prior to this attempt to be honest)ive come to the conclussion that i cant see a way of doing it short of getting ethernet put in the other.
im not sure with regard if the modem is usb i wouls presume so as both work on broadband via the modems

I know nothing about all this really but is your router wireless? I have a wireless router on the pc which is connected to the broadband 24/7 and use a usb dongle to connect the laptop which means the pc doesn't have to be connected for the laptop to work?
Is this what you mean?0 -
cheers edlass:D
it isnt wireless(ex hubby just bought it)
i just want to be able to connect them both at the same time so the kids can both go on dsl broadband at the same time:o
at mo they just argue whose turn it is all the time:(It is not what you give your friend, but what you are willing to give him that determines the quality of friendship. -- Mary Dixon Thayer0 -
