Hi,
Does anyoner know of any current new boiler schemes for over 60's that offer a grant or free boiler replacement? My local council has a free replcement scheme for boilers over 15 years old but its full at the moment and ends at the end of the month. Just wondering if there are any others.
Cheers

this could be worth a try?0 -
The only requirement is that customers sign up to a five-year dual-fuel gas and electricity supply with Energetix, which the firm claims will be cheaper than any offered by the Big Six- British Gas, EDF, Eon, Npower, ScottishPower and SSE
I'll believe it when I see it ... or more importantly see details of their tariffs
Until then, be careful what you agree to ...0 -

It's really not insane - it's basically the same model as 'free' solar panels.
They get the FIT, you get the electricity.
Hmm.
£1600 - looking, I find the FIT rates are 13p/kWh for 10 years - and the claim is 1600 units a year.
Or £240. This comes out to after 10 years £2.4K.
If we assume a 7% 'mortgage', which is in effect 5% after taking into account 2% inflation uprating in the FIT, the numbers about work, maybe even with a little profit.
Of course, this all relies on the boiler being reliable.
If it's replaced - they don't get the FIT.
This is however very sensitive to actual load conditions.
I suspect they may be able to 'game' more money out of the system, by being a - effectively - very low carbon generation system, though I don't know how the supplier side of the electricity buisness works.0 -
There's still advice about the Warm Front scheme on the MSE website which ended in January!
I'm also looking for help with replacing my boiler, I'm not on benefits though. The boiler's around 25 years old, still works fine but our bills are huge and I'm sure it must be down to it's inefficiency.0 -

Look up your exact model number, and find out the efficiency.
Plus, don't assume that if your new boiler was to be 90% efficient, your old one 75%, you will save 20% of fuel.
To hit the 90% efficiency figure may for example require you to replace your radiators and pipework too.
And you may find it only hits 85%, even after spending 3K on upgrading the radiators and pipework.
Saving a little over 10% on fuel if you have to invest 3K - or even if you need to 'only' invest 1K is questionable.
Turn the heating down 1C, and you will save the same amount.
And put aside a little for when the boiler does actually fail.0 -
This is only for the North of England.0
