Whilst interesting news, I can't help thinking that MSE has completely neglected the other side to this story over the past six weeks or so.


During the last six weeks I think it is, diesel prices have been ratcheted straight up by the cartel of which Asda is plainly a member to an all time high as seen at Asda from 132.7p/l to over 140p/l - I think I may even have bought some at 142.7 from Asda during this period. I am not so certain that it didn't even go to 143.7p/l at their cheapest outlets (their price up till now has usually varied between store locations).

The story seven weeks ago (or whenever this unregulated hike took place was that wholesale prices had been speculated such that a rise of 4p/l was anticipated. 4p + 132.7p = 136.7p so why did we see prices soar way beyond that in the first place?

So even with this new "story" MSE has chosen to put about today, the price is still going to be a full penny a litre higher than we were promised before the ratchet was first applied.

Do the storytellers think we are all fools?

I usually get my diesel from either ASDA Bedminster, Bristol or ASDA Longwell Green, Bristol and my records show that the highest I've paid in the last 6 weeks was 142.7p/L on 01/03/2013 at Longwell Green.

It's nice to see those of us motorists, who chose diesels for the higher mpg and lower emissions (OK, if only for the £30 VED) have our turn at long last.

I love the low end torque of diesels, but I do mostly short shopping trips, so I'm a little weary of the DPF problems.

Just switched from a 1.5L diesel to a 1.3L petrol.
Getting 38mpg from the petrol instead of 45mpg (diesel).
Insurance is £100 cheaper, though, so it sort of balances out as I do 6,000 miles a year.

In my area I can buy Esso diesel for the same price as Tesco, Asda further into East London is a little cheaper.


But as Esso, Shell and BP diesel have a better additive package I will stick with them.

My wife has ran her Clio dci almost exclusively on Tesco diesel and she now has injectors that sound like a marching band.

Wow, worth saving a penny a litre!

Supermarkets they put the price up . They splash a price decrease all over the papers .They put the price up they have a round of price cuts .
Likewise food spot a price increase on an item and one month later see a price reduction .Just a game they all play to keep the shoppers confused . Even feed us steroids now to keep us hyper .

As last post says, common practise. Kitted out my house when I bought it just before Xmas 2012. All prices paid were fresh in memory when went back in for January "sales" and the was price of my £380 tv was £480 down to £380! Exactly the same effing price, someone thinks they are saving £100 when it's been that price for months.

So much for Asda saying they'll not charge more tan 137.7 per lietre of diesel. Our local Asda is 139.7. Still, its better than the NI average of 143..9.

Sainsburys dropped it 2p some weeks ago to 139.9, had it rise by 2p over the following few weeks back to 141.9 and now drop it back to 139.9.

They really are looking after the motorist !! well done

The RAC Foundation's director Professor Stephen Glaister warned that the UK's infrastructure could not cope with an increase in diesel's popularity.
"Our ageing refineries are not geared up to cope with growing demand for diesel and you can't just flick a switch to produce more," he said.
"Already we are a net importer of diesel and, if sales of diesel-powered cars continue to surge, our reliance on foreign imports will grow, especially if the economy recovers and mileage increases."
