My friend started a business and called it Garden Angels. She did alright with it, ended up employing people, then she sold it and moved abroad. I like the name Garden Angels. It's catchy and memorable.

Don't use your name. Use a name that means something and says what the business is all about. Previous poster's example of Garden Angels is an excellent one.

Keep it simple - Cards \ Flyers with your name & what you do - is it just maintainence or bigger projects.. This says more than 'Random Garden Services'

Landline number gives a more permanent feel to the business, but mobile is better if people want to get in contact through the day - afterall if your working who will be answering the phone? If you are always about to answer the phone then your not getting much work in. Using a mobile is easier to turn off on an evening when you want a bit of peace & quiet..

where abouts are you? as might need a bit of gardening doing.. Good prices might lead to recommendations onwards..

It is tricky the name thing. I like names like "Sunflower Garden Services" etc but maybe I am old fashioned that I like to see someone's name.

As for the gardening, I am by no means an expert. Just lawns, hedges, pruning, clearances etc until my knowledge picks up. Fully prepared to study when funds aren't as tight as I'd also like to be able to do heavier planting, fencing, little patios & paths, smaller walls etc (soft landscaping - I'll leave the big stuff and tree surgery etc to the experts). Ironically just 2 or 3 years ago if you'd said to me that I would be considering this as a business I would have thought you were insane. Then my Mum and Dad asked me to help out with their Garden and it was like someone flipped a switch in my mind. I am very happy doing it. I am based in Hertfordshire.
