Student's with parents claiming housing benefit - please read!

Students who's parents claim housing benefit and live in a council or housing association home are not entitled to a bedroom after the first year!

I've been helping a friend with this problem and eventually spoke to someone at england.shelter.org.uk as on their website it gives the answer that 'as long as a student comes home for two weeks a year then they are entitled to a bedroom.'
As the local council wouldn't accept this we have tried to find evidence to support the claim as their child is a second year student.
After contact their MP (Tory) and not being able to get a clear answer we've trawled the internet.
Eventually contacting shelter to be told that they are only allowed the bedroom in the first year as most students are in halls and they close for part of the year. Once a student is in their own place they are deemed as leaving home.

Conclusion - children who's parent's receive housing benefit don't go to University or if they do they need to go to a local one.

Most people I know living in private accommodation have 40 week lets or similar and must move out during the summer vacation.

Are there many people staying all year round?

Whether they choose to live in the house or not, most lets I've encountered run July-July. Not a lot of people stay over the summer but often their houses are available for them.

Seriously. I wonder at peoples logic
you have a 'child' who is away most of the year?
You think the taxpayer should support you having an empty room for most of the year?
well shouldn't grannies be allowed to have a spare room for grandkids staying over too?

conclusion: children who's parent's receive housing benefit don't go to University all year and need to crash on the couch whilst home or they need to go to a local one.

most students I know are staying in flat shares and working to cover the rent in the holidays

Erm, after first year rents are July-July, so they do have a house all year, whether they stay in it or not. I know plenty of people who are staying at my uni over the summer because they don't want to go back to their parents.
