I think A&L pays the debits before the credits so yes you have gone into the red.

Funny you should mention that ... When my money showed as credited on my A&L account I transferred some cash into my ISA. The next day it showed the transfer first (making it a - figure) and then the credit.

But the credit was definately there first otherwise I wouldn't have been able to transfer in the first place and I've not been charged!

Yes, that's the same as me - maybe it's just the way internet banking is set up - it might look different on a paper statement

  • A & L online banking is confusing and IMO designed to trick you into going overdrawn.

i had a similar situation to this because although on the day itself, the order the transactions had happened meant I hadn't gone over my OD limit, but when you look the next day, they 'reorder' the transactions (possibly like KTF said, with debits first) and this made it look like I had gone over the limit.

I rang them up in a panic but they said it was fine, and that it was the balance at the end of the day which counted? I'm not really sure if that explanation was correct but I wasn't charged. hope you aren't.

I've noticed them re-sorting transactions, too. I do update my downloaded statement file after almost every transaction, but that's just me being "anal".

I've just checked my statement and, on the 4 days on which I've got both debits and credits, the orders are (now) ... DC, DC, DCDD & CD.

This isn't a problem. I've done it dozens of times (I've had a -£3000 balance before when I've transferred funds through my current account from my old online saver to my old Direct ISA). A&L always list debits before credits on your statement, but as long as the funds were 'available' at the time of the transfer (meaning that you have to do it manually - automated transfers go out before credits are applied) it's OK, at least for transfers between linked A&L accounts.

Funny that I should be stumbling over this thread - I noticed this today as well. I set up my account, paid money in and when it showed up, transferred it over to the Direct and Plus Saver. However, on my statement it shows that I have transferred the money first, then got it into my account, which is definitely not possible. I think it's most unfair to re-sort transactions, especially if it apparently doesn't mean a thing - why do it then?
